The education sector is one of the most seriously affected by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Learning that students initially present in class is replaced by online learning, which requires educational practitioners to adapt quickly in situations like this. Online lectures become mandatory food for students and lecturers to carry out education in the midst of a pandemic. The world of education was given a surprise, all aspects of supporting the online learning system were stuttering and seemed to be less ready.

Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University already has facilities to support online learning with the use of the My Klass platform that has been developed since 2016. But in practice in a pandemic situation, the advantages and disadvantages are felt by its users. Then the question arises that how effective is online learning done at UMY? Endro Dwi Hatmanto, S.Pd., M.A., Ph. D one of the UMY English Education lecturers said that to measure the effectiveness of online learning can be known by conducting a survey directly to the user, and that has been done by UMY with data of more than 50 percent of students responding positively to online learning activities and less than 50 percent dissatisfied.

“Even so there are still complaints from students, because indeed we are suddenly required to study full online, previously we used 60 percent face to face and 40 percent online. The problem that was expressed by students was that some lecturers gave too many assignments, which we explored turned out to be lecturers who had never participated in a SPADA (Online Learning System) grant that was implemented by the UMY Educational Development Institute, “Endro said, contacted by telephone.

With this, it turns out that the problem is also felt by lecturers who are required to be creative and fully understand how the online lectures work. Even though Endro said, that the facilities provided by UMY to carry out online lectures were very complete, it was just how the lecturer used it.

“In the learning management system used by UMY it is actually very complete, lecturers can upload various materials such as powerpoint presentations, enter links from the internet, and also insert video learning that lecturers have made into Myklass. But we have continued to urge long before there is a pandemic that lecturers use SPADA, ideally 50 percent of lecturers have followed it, so hopefully with a situation like this can make lecturers aware of the importance of studying online lectures, “he continued.

The losses incurred due to the pandemic are indeed very many, and have been felt throughout the community. Even so, Endro revealed there are sides that can be taken as valuable lessons, especially in the world of education, which could have made online lectures as new normal after the pandemic.

“The pandemic had such a big impact, but we can see from the positive side. Like our lecturers, we can now and want to teach online through platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, My Klass and so on, and so do students. Later learning online will become a new habit (New Normal) to be applied in Indonesia, and UMY is ready with the facilities it has, “Endro concluded. (Hbb)
